Portrait of an Era - Trinity College Dublin in the 1960's

A new book has just been published that may be of interest to members of our group.

Quoting Charles Edwards (TCD1961-1965), one of the book's sponsors,

This wonderful collection of photographs, taken in the 1960's, shows undergraduates during The Golden Era, when Trinity was 'small enough to be a college yet large enough to be a university'. It was a time when everybody knew each other and the entire student body fitted easily into the beautiful Georgian buildings, situated in the very heart of Dublin.

It has had an excellent write up in The Irish Times, which can be viewed alongside a selection of the photographs on this link:

International Welcome Programme Volunteers

The TCD Alumni Office, in conjunction with TCD's Global Relations office, is launching an International Welcome Programme and we are looking for volunteers.

The voluntary programme connects Trinity students who are abroad on an exchange with Trinity alumni who currently reside in the same region. The purpose is to welcome and provide these students with support in their transition to a year abroad and educate them on new cultural experiences (e.g. cultural differences, cost of living, extracurricular activities in the area etc).

If you would be interested in getting involved, please contact alumni@tcd.ie.

Reading of The Midnight Court

Elsa Bolam from the Bloomsday Montreal Committee wrote:
"This unique comic poem composed around 1777 in Irish Gaelic, and passed on orally until the 20th Century, was translated in the 1950's into rhyming couplets by David Marcus.

In 18th Century Ireland, then in the grip of the Penal Laws, this poem, which tackles the very real problem of a declining population, deliberately flouted convention and delighted in saying the forbidden, as it was recited to illicit gatherings of ordinary people who found it an uproarious outlet. For a short while it took away the pain for those who felt themselves exploited by the English, the landowners, and the Church."

The reading can be found at The Midnight Court - YouTube. There is various other information at Festival Bloomsday Montreal promoting Irish culture.
